Rekenreks
This week in math we've been using a tool called a Rekenrek. This is kind of like an abacus, with two rows of beads. There are 10 beads on each row, 5 red, 5 white. Each student has their own Rekenrek to work with and we do activities like sliding over a certain number of beads in one move, or two moves for two digit numbers that require both rows. In order to do this students have to be able to SEE the number, therefore developing a stronger number sense. The two colors help them see groups of five without having to count by ones. We are learning the different combinations that can make certain numbers. I think the students enjoy this hands on tool and it's fun to watch them problem solve and explain their thinking!
